The Dean: intelligence in the service of academic excellence.
The Dean provides an objective lens on academic achievement and the quality of teaching and learning. Each week, it reviews the chat logs, and sends home a report.
The reports are stored securely with the student’s account. The Dean also maintains each student’s ‘living profile’ — a running picture of how they learn best. The next time the student struggles with a concept, Cal can draw on how they made a breakthrough in a similar situation before.
Each report includes a Cognitive Depth score (CDI, 1–5). Students earning high scores are demonstrating the ability to articulate learned concepts in their own words and apply them in novel situations independently.
The Dean is a distinct AI auditor, running on a separate model. Its job is to review the chat logs generated by every student’s interactions with Cal. Based on these weekly reviews, the Dean will publish and send out the Dean’s Report, which evaluates the level of engagement and cognitive depth demonstrated in a student’s chat logs. These reports serve a number of important purposes:
They provide students and parents with timely feedback on the student’s academic progress, citing specific examples of teaching and learning methods that worked effectively, and where cognitive blocks remain. The student’s engagement with Cal is not a black box — there is transparency and accountability built into the system. The student receives the identical report at the same time — nothing in it is hidden from them, and nothing is softened for you.

A sample report. The student is invented and the sessions are illustrative — we don’t publish real children’s work. The layout, the scoring and the wording are exactly what arrives in your inbox every Saturday. The yellow banner is a flag: when the Dean notices something a parent should know about — here, a session that ran past midnight — it says so, plainly.
