The Dean: intelligence in the service of academic excellence.

Cal is your personalized learning companion— he is designed to be a tireless, pedagogically agile, and empathetic teacher. The Dean provides an objective lens on academic achievement and the quality of teaching and learning.

  • the reports are stored in the individual student’s knowledge base (KB) and form the basis of Cal’s long term memory of that student’s learning preferences. These memories are stored in the ‘living profile’ of Graduate Tier students. The next time the student struggles with a concept, Cal will remember how they made a breakthrough when confronted with a similar situation in the past.

  • at the Graduate subscription tier, these logs are reviewed daily and used to generate a Cognitive Depth Score (CDI 1-5) that is part of the Dean’s weekly report (daily optional). Students earning high cognitive depth scores are demonstrating the ability to articulate learned concepts in their own words, and apply these concepts in novel situations independently.

The Dean is a distinct AI auditor, running on a separate model. Its job is to review the chat logs generated by every student’s interactions with Cal. Based on these periodic reviews (daily, weekly, or monthly), the Dean will publish and send out the Dean’s Report, which evaluates the level of engagement and cognitive depth demonstrated in a student’s chat logs. These reports serve a number of important purposes:

  • they provide students and parents with timely feedback on the student’s academic progress, citing specific examples of teaching and learning methods that worked effectively, and where cognitive blocks remain. The student’s engagement with Cal is not a black box — there is transparency and accountability built into the system
